Council invites you to have your say during the development period of a Climate Action Plan specific to Mansfield Shire.

In May 2019 Mansfield Shire Council acknowledged climate change and passed a Councillor initiated resolution to develop a Climate Action Plan.

A Climate Action background paper will be developed to assess emissions from Mansfield Shire Council operations and the broader community and develop a range of possible Council responses for consideration.

The scope of Climate Action Plans can vary depending on the level of organisation commitment to climate action. This can range from a declaration of a ‘Climate Emergency’ (Mansfield Shire Council has not done this yet) with a strong committed and short term response to implement actions to mitigate and address climate change, through to a more limited emissions reduction approach primarily to minimise Council’s utility costs.

Community projects such as Electric Vehicle charging stations, community energy or support for low income households under a future of climate change can all be considered in a Climate Action Plan subject to the ambition of Council.

Carbon offset credits may be considered and budgeted for after all other practical emission reduction projects are implemented.

Regional councils are well placed to go beyond a zero net emission target and invest in renewable energy projects. This may occur with community investment and can provide revenue streams that provide a net community financial, social and environmental benefit.

The Climate Action Plan will reflect the ambition of Council to address climate change and provide a roadmap for emission reduction and renewable energy projects. The Background Paper - now available - provides an informed report on how Council can invest in climate change activities that reflect the ambition of the broader community.

Four fact sheets are now available and attached to this page to summarise where Council can support community ideas provided by our community below.

Council invites you to propose further feedback and ask questions about the Climate Action Plan Background Paper.
