Overview
Council is proposing a major upgrade for the intersection of Ogilvies Road and Rifle Butts Road that aims to create a safer, more efficient intersection for all road users, pedestrians and cyclists.
The proposed design will change the road alignment and will feature new raised traffic islands. These changes are designed to guide vehicles through the intersection by clearly defining turning paths, improving the general flow of traffic and safety.
A key feature of the upgrade is a new shared path that will connect to paths on Highton Lane and Monkey Gully Road. The extension of the existing culvert will allow for the new path to be separated from the existing vehicle creek crossing. This dedicated shared path will mean pedestrians and cyclists no longer have to use the road to cross the creek, vastly improving safety. The intersection will also provide clearer crossing points for the shared path and will integrate with the new raised traffic islands.
The proposed extension of the culvert will also allow for the widening of the vehicle creek crossing from the existing single lane to two lanes. This will remove a key bottleneck and improve traffic flow on Rifle Butts Road.
The upgrade will incorporate improved drainage throughout the intersection to reduce water pooling on the road surface, which will provide better safety during wet weather and will help to preserve the condition of the roads pavement.
To accommodate the new road layout, Council will work directly with affected property owners to reconstruct driveways to maintain access.
