Proposed Reduction

Council has received requests to reduce the speed limit on Erril Street, Mansfield. We have reviewed the requests and propose the reduction below based on the Department of Transport and Planning's Speed Zoning Technical Guidelines.

To give feedback on the proposal, please take our survey on this page by 7 September.

Proposed reduction

Road name Section Current limit Proposed limit
Erril Street, Mansfield Whole street 50km/h 20km/h

Rationale

Erril Street functions primarily as an off-street parking area. Local businesses have raised concerns about the safety of pedestrians in the area. Children crossing the road to access the nearby youth centre are especially at-risk as they are often difficult to see between parked cars.

Vehicle speed has a significant effect on the likelihood of collisions and the severity of resulting injuries.

The street currently uses the default speed limit of 50km/h as no speed signs are installed. Recent road usage data shows 85% of vehicles are already travelling below 20 km/h due to the road environment, which means most driver travel times will not be affected by the proposed reduction.

Next steps

Council will assess the feedback received and make a decision on whether to apply for a speed limit reduction.

Speed limit changes are governed by the Department of Transport and Planning using a defined process and Council does not have the authority to make changes unilaterally. The Department will accept or reject our application based on the Speed Zoning Technical Guidelines.
