What is the difference between a track and a trail?

For the purposes of the Strategy, tracks refer to well-maintained all-weather surfaces designed specifically for walking/running and cycling, while trails are generally less developed routes intended for hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding, requiring lower levels of design and maintenance.

    Why is a strategy needed?

A strategy will guide investment, upgrades, and the long-term management of tracks and trails. Specifically, it enables us to:

    • Assess the current network
Review existing tracks and trails to understand how they’re used, how well they connect, and what condition they’re in.
    • Identify issues and opportunities
Look at challenges and potential improvements to enhance user experience, accessibility, and safety.
    • Evaluate economic benefits
Assess how an improved and expanded network can support local businesses and tourism across the region.
    • Develop a clear vision, goals and actions
Define a long-term vision and set clear, actionable priorities to guide track and trail investment over the next 20 years.

What area does the strategy cover?

The strategy includes all recreational tracks and trails within the Mansfield Shire and the Alpine Resorts - Mt Buller and Mt Stirling.

Mansfield Shire Council and Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV) are working together to develop the strategy.

How can I contribute to the strategy?

Your knowledge and ideas are vital. Help us develop a strategy that works for everyone by getting involved in one or more of the following ways:

    • Take the Online Community Survey
Share your experiences, preferences, and ideas for improving tracks and trails.
    • Explore the Interactive Map
Drop a pin to highlight specific locations, issues, or opportunities and tell us what you'd like to see improved.
    • Join a Community Drop-in Session
Meet our team, ask questions, and share your thoughts face-to-face at one of our upcoming sessions.

When will the strategy be delivered?

Once Council endorses the strategy, the actions will be delivered in phases over the next 20 years, prioritising projects based on community need, feasibility, and available funding.

How will the actions identified in the strategy be funded?

Funding will be sourced through a combination of Council budgets, State and Federal Government grants, and potential partnerships with Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV).

    Can the strategy be updated?

Yes, the strategy will be reviewed periodically to adapt to changing community needs and emerging opportunities.
