Mansfield Shire Council wants to know where you want Urban Tree Plantings.

Urban greening and urban tree management can contribute to cooling regional towns supporting healthy and productive communities. Providing cooling through shade, street trees lower daytime surface temperatures. Other environmental benefits include improved air quality and carbon sequestration.

Urban tree plantings also have positive impacts on the economy by strategic planning of shading and shelter from trees – a 5-10% reduction in energy costs from an increase of 10% tree cover. The proper maintenance of trees along streets and in parks can have a positive impact on housing prices and enhance the overall appeal and atmosphere of Mansfield. This, in turn, can boost tourism and strengthen the local economy.

Additionally, there are social benefits from attractive urban landscapes with increased use through pedestrian and cycling activity – this leads to growth in community interaction and lowering stress levels.

Council is working strategically to enhance our urban treescapes. By planting species of trees that are better adapted to the changing climate, costs can be minimised while providing maximum benefits to our communities.

Mansfield Shire is to be commended for looking ahead and acknowledging the importance of urban tree plantings, with the effects of hotter and drier climate change predicted to be felt by 2030.
I would strongly advocate the use of drought tolerant endemic Australian Native trees with good canopy wherever possible. This strategy would also add to the biodiversity that's under increasing threat in the area.
The town's colorful deciduous trees look spectacular in Winter, but being exotic and introduced from outside the region, don't really contribute to preserving the unique high country natural environment.
