    Why is so much road safety signage being proposed?

    Road safety signage is being proposed at locations where existing signage is missing, limited, or does not meet current standards. The signage is intended to provide advance warning to drivers of potential hazards and improve road safety outcomes.

    Have measures been taken to ensure horse floats, towing vehicles, and trucks can turn from Old Tolmie Road into Tolmie–Mahaikah road and vice versa?

    Yes. The proposed splitter island is fully mountable and 50 mm high to allow sufficient turning radius for larger vehicles, including service vehicles, trucks, and towing vehicles.

    Why is a roundabout not being proposed at the old Tolmie & Tolmie–Mahaikah intersection?

    While a roundabout would improve safety at the intersection, it would require significant funding and major changes to the surrounding road network. The current proposal focuses on delivering safety improvements within the available funding allocation.

    Will vegetation trimming be undertaken to improve sight distance?

    Yes. Council will undertake vegetation trimming where required to improve sight distance.

    Will there be measures to better define the intersection so drivers on Tolmie–Mahaikah road give way to drivers on Old Tolmie Road?

    Mansfield Shire Council has engaged Wangaratta Excavations to undertake safety improvements at the intersection of Old Tolmie Road and Tolmie - Mahaikah Road. 

    Construction is scheduled to commence on Monday 11 May 2026, with an estimated completion date of 19 June, weather permitting.

    The project scope includes:

    • Intersection safety improvements by adding a traffic island and defining the intersection.

    • Upgraded line marking and signage at the approaches. This will include Chevron Alignment Markers (CAMs), give way signs, and a line marked traffic island to warn the drivers of the intersection.

    • Marked lane width adjustments are proposed on Tolmie-Mahaikah Rd which will help reduce approach speeds.

    • Improving sight lines and shoulder sealing on Old Tolmie Rd to avoid gravel build up on the road and improve safety for motorcyclists at the sharp curve.

    • Drainage improvements and concrete kerb placement.

    Work crews will be on site from 7am to 5pm. To ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians and road users, traffic management will be in place during construction including temporary lane closures requiring hold and release traffic control. Please observe all signage and follow traffic management instructions to ensure the safety of all road users and workers.
