Tree Management Plan
Consultation has concluded
The Tree Management Plan was endorsed by Council at the Council Meeting on Tuesday 28 November 2023. A copy of the endorsed Plan can be downloaded on the right hand side of this page or on Council's website.
Mansfield Shire Council is working on clear management directives towards tree management, and particularly the maintenance and risk management of tree assets growing on Council owned and managed land, which also covers trees within managed roads and other reserves in Mansfield Shire and we are seeking community feedback.
You can view the Draft Tree Management Plan on the right hand side of this page under Documents. If you require a physical copy please contact Council on 03 5775 8555 or email environment@mansfield.vic.gov.au to request that a print copy be made available for collection.
Feedback will be accepted up to 5:00 pm on Thursday 10 August 2023.
The value of trees within the environment is widely accepted as high, due to their positive contribution towards maintaining the Shire’s sustainability, community health and atmosphere. Collectively, trees add value to our landscapes by softening the harsh lines of buildings, complimenting architecture, improving biodiversity, providing privacy, and lowering the ground temperature surrounding treed areas. The understanding of the role that trees play in our environment has led to an increase in the veneration of trees and they can evoke strong passions.
Council acknowledges that while trees in public areas offer numerous advantages, their presence can also pose risks to the general public, property, and essential services due to the potential for limb loss or complete tree failure. The establishment of new trees involves substantial costs, including initial pruning, weight reduction, and ongoing maintenance, especially for larger trees that require specialised access. Additionally, trees can significantly impact infrastructure such as drainage systems, construction projects, roads, footpaths, playgrounds, and buildings.
