Indoor Aquatic Centre – it's now about saving lives

I moved to Mansfield 6 years ago with a baby and a toddler. Our property like many others who live here has a dam and a creek. The lifestyle in our district is all about enjoying our beautiful rivers, lakes and swimming holes, and cooling off in backyard pools. Every kid (and adult!) deserves the opportunity to thrive safely in this environment.

There was no public indoor year-round pool on offer but my kids were lucky enough to learn water safety and skills in that window that George’s Fish was open. We now drive the 1.5hr round trip every Saturday to Benalla so they can continue their journey to being confident and safe swimmers.

So what about those who understandably don’t want to or can’t make that trip one day a week? By the way, there is no chance I would have done this with pre-schoolers – naps, nappies and the very real chance they wouldn’t get in the water when we got there!

This is a whole generation of well-meaning families who simply don’t have a year-round comfortable and convenient option to make sure their kids are water safe.

And beyond this, individuals who would like to or need to swim regularly for fitness, recovery and/or mental health.

If as a community we are trying to make sure the people of Mansfield are physically and mentally healthy, are happy and comfortable, safe and secure AND connected to each other, we really fall well short of this without a year-round pool on offer. It’s about supporting that vision but mostly it’s now about saving lives.

Vision:
The document is a fascinating and useful insight into the way Mansfield sees its future.

I found myself, however, searching for the Conclusion.

I am unsure looking at what is on the website what the terms of reference were, but for it to have more use beyond the current Council Plan (which it makes useful reference to), it would be helpful if it were more strategic and expansive with reference to the "barriers" and "enablers".

That is, it is very adequate with respect to "what" but needs more "how" if it is to be of more use to future Councils, and of strategic relevance to the Council Plans of the next decade.  There are, for instance obvious barriers to certain of its aspirations, so to avoid it being seen in future as a generic wish list, it needs to identify strategies to overcome those barriers. Similarly, reference to the community's vision should make it possible to identify strategic opportunities which align with that vision. Some of these are clear from the appendices, but the current document fails to synthesise them.

Such synthesis (a conclusion) would improve the way the document relates to future Council Plans (not just the current one).

Unfortunately I was otherwise occupied during the consultation period, and the Incorporated organisations I am part of were not invited to participate. This is not a criticism, just an explanation with respect to what is a late contribution.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment.
