Council is proposing to upgrade the intersection of Dead Horse Lane and the Mansfield-Whitfield Road by installing a roundabout to improve safety for all road users.
This intersection has been identified as a blackspot location with a history of serious crashes. Council has developed two concept designs for a new roundabout and is working in collaboration with Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) to finalise the design. We are now seeking your feedback on both options.
This project is primarily funded by the Federal Government's Blackspot Funding Program.

Background
The intersection of Dead Horse Lane and the Mansfield-Whitfield Road is a key intersection in our road network. Dead Horse Lane forms part of the Mansfield Heavy Vehicle Alternative Route, meaning it carries a significant amount of large truck traffic and Mansfield-Whitfield road is an Arterial road.
The intersection has a history of serious crashes and a roundabout is a proven solution to reduce the likelihood and severity of crashes at intersections like this by forcing all vehicles to slow down and give way according to standard road rules.
What is Being Proposed?
We have developed two concept designs for the new roundabout. Option 1 is supported by DTP and Option 2 is being explored as it would work in a lower speed environment than we currently have and is anticipated to have a lower construction cost (the estimated cost for Option 2 is $250,000 less than Option 1).
We are seeking community feedback on both to help us understand how the community view each option, taking into account the different impact on traffic speeds for each design. The final design will need to be approved by DTP being the responsible authority for Mansfield-Whitfield Road.
You can view the detailed concept plans for both options on this page.
Option 1:
Compact roundabout with reverse curves on the North and South legs.
No speed reduction required (the existing speed limit of 80km/h would apply north and south of the roundabout).
Comparatively higher cost.
Option 2:
Compact roundabout with reverse curve on the North leg.
Speed reduction is required along Mansfield-Whitfield Road to 60km/h when approaching the roundabout from the South leg.
Comparatively lower cost (anticipated to be $250,000 less than Option1).
Both design options will feature a 'wombat crossing' on the Eastern leg of Dead Horse Lane. This will consists of a platform raised to the same level as the adjacent pedestrian footpaths, with Pedestrian Crossing (Zebra) pavement markings on top. this will provide a safe and accessible crossing that connects the shared path along Mansfield-Whitfield Road.
How to Have Your Say
Your local knowledge and feedback are vital. We are seeking your input on both proposed options and your preference for the final design.
Feedback for this consultation closes on 24 December.
