Mansfield Shire Council is progressing the concept design for new and upgraded car parking areas as part of the broader Mansfield Station Precinct Activation Program.

The proposed carparks are designed to improve access to key recreational and tourism assets within the precinct including the Great Victorian Rail Trail, the Mansfield Visitor Information Centre and the Mansfield Heritage Museum.

Together these carparks aim to reduce congestion, improve accessibility, and provide parking options that better support the growing number of visitors to the precinct. The designs also cater for a range of users, including general visitors, people travelling with caravans, horse riders with horse floats and tour buses.

This project forms part of Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing visitor experience, supporting recreational tourism, and improving connectivity across the Mansfield Station Precinct.

The multi-project transformation of the Mansfield Station Precinct is made possible by a $14.1 million grant from the Australian Government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program.

    Background

The Mansfield Station Precinct Activation Program includes upgrades to access, connectivity and visitor infrastructure across the precinct.

As visitation to Mansfield continues to grow, particularly from Great Victorian Rail Trail users, tourists travelling with caravans, horse riders, and visitors to the future fenced dog park, and the Heritage Museum, the need for safe, functional and purpose-built parking has become increasingly important.

To support this growth, Council is developing concept designs for several new and improved parking areas within the precinct. These carparks are located at:

    • Withers Lane
    • Kitchen Street
    • Visitor Information Centre

Each location has been designed to support different types of users while improving overall access, safety and traffic movement throughout the precinct.

What’s Proposed in the Concept Design?

    Withers Lane Carpark

The Withers Lane Carpark is designed as a practical, multi-use parking area that supports visitors travelling with horses while also accommodating general users.

    Key features include:

    • Gravel surface carpark designed to suit the rural setting and accommodate standard and long vehicles.
    • Concreted driveway crossover to improve durability and reduce wear.
    • 50 standard vehicle parking and 4 dedicated long vehicle spaces for vehicles towing horse caravans.
    • Secure horse tie-up points and a water trough to support horse riders.
    • Gravel footpath connecting the horse holding area to the Great Victorian Rail Trail.
    • Sealed footpath linking the carpark to the future fenced dog park for both dog owners and general public use.

    Kitchen Street Carpark

The Kitchen Street Carpark will provide a larger sealed parking area located behind the Mansfield Heritage Museum and adjacent to Yenckens Hardware.

    Key features include:

    • Approximately 70 sealed parking spaces for general visitor use including on-street parking along Kitchen Street for approximately 12 vehicles.
    • Accessible parking bays designed to improve access for people with disabilities.
    • Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
    • New pedestrian footpaths to improve safety and connectivity within the site.
    • A mini roundabout at the carpark entrance to improve traffic flow on Kitchen Street.

    Visitor Information Centre Carpark

The Visitor Information Centre Carpark will provide convenient parking for visitors accessing the Mansfield Visitor Information Centre, Mansfield Heritage Museum and the Great Victorian Rail Trail.

    Key features include:

    • A sealed carpark with approximately 40 standard parking spaces.
    • Accessible parking bays for people with disabilities.
    • Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
    • A dedicated bus drop-off area.
    • Long vehicle parking bays for caravans.
    • New pedestrian footpaths to improve access to surrounding facilities.
